Jakhoo Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to the Hindu deity Hanuman, is located atop Jakhoo Hill, 2.5 km (1.3 miles) east of the Ridge in Shimla, standing at a height of 2,455 meters (8,000 feet) above sea level.
As the highest peak in Shimla, the temple offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Shivalik Ranges and the nearby town of Sanjauli. Every year, a grand festival is held at the temple during Dushera to honor Lord Hanuman, attracting many devotees and tourists.
Visitors can reach the temple by a steep climb from the Ridge, following a path behind the church, or choose to hire a pony or horse for the journey. According to legend, Lord Hanuman stopped at this spot to rest while searching for the Sanjivni Booti to revive Lakshman, a key moment in the epic Ramayana. Upon arriving at the temple, visitors are advised to secure their belongings and watch out for the monkeys that roam freely around the site, a fitting tribute to the Monkey Lord.
Before entering the temple, visitors must remove their shoes and place them in the designated “shoe house.” Several eateries are available at the temple site, offering a chance to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Local devotees often ring the temple bell for good luck before descending back into Shimla, completing their visit to this sacred and scenic destination.
