The name “Kufri” is derived from the local word “kufr,” meaning “lake,” and the area is known for its serene beauty and high-altitude charm. The area was once part of the Kingdom of Nepal but was ceded to the British Raj after the Sugauli Treaty. It remained relatively hidden until the British discovered it in 1819.
