The Mall

Mall Road is the bustling heart of Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. Constructed during British colonial rule, it is situated just below the Ridge and is home to several important offices, including the municipal corporation, fire service, and police headquarters.
This road is unique because automobiles, except for emergency vehicles, are not allowed, making it a peaceful haven for both locals and tourists who can often be seen leisurely strolling along it, particularly in the evenings.
Mall Road is lined with a variety of showrooms, department stores, shops, restaurants, and cafes, offering something for every visitor. One notable feature is the Himachal Emporium, which showcases handicraft products from the region, such as locally designed woollen cloths, branded fabrics, pottery, and jewellery. For book lovers, there are at least three bookstores, including one that specializes in old books.
At the western end of Mall Road, you’ll find Scandal Point, where it meets Ridge Road. The name “Scandal Point” has an interesting backstory, linked to the alleged elopement of a British lady with an Indian Maharaja. According to the story, the Maharaja of Patiala eloped with the daughter of the British Viceroy, which caused a stir among the British authorities, leading to his banishment from Shimla. In response, the Maharaja founded a new summer capital in Chail, a beautiful hill station located 45 km from Shimla, which has since become a popular retreat.
